Intelligent, independent, news and life Salon's was the brainchild of a group of independent journalists and writers. They envisioned a forum where people like themselves could present their ideas, without charge, to a likeminded audience. Although Salon has been forced to begin charging for unlimited access to the site (unregistered users can gain access after viewing a brief advertisement), the essential values of its founders have remained intact. Contributors to the site are overwhelmingly left-leaning; however, most of their arguments are intelligently argued and generally non-abrasive. And best of all, because they are beholden to no media conglomerate, Salon contributors can set anyone in their sights. Pow! As a subscriber, I generally start the day by downloading the daily PDF edition (cool feature). Throughout the day I check the site's "FROM THE WIRES" and "WARROOM 2004" sections. The "WIRES" section provides concise AP reports of the latest news--ideal for busy people wishing to stay in the loop. The "WARROOM" section is a much more spirited (and political) roundup of the day's media. I highly recommend making use of the site's free daypasses until you get a good sense of what to expect. It's no-risk, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Please don't be put off by my straight 5-star ratings...it really is an excellent site.
